What is E420?

Sorbitol, less commonly known as glucitol, is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose, which changes the converted aldehyde group (−CHO) to a primary alcohol group (−CH2OH). E420 sits in the E400–E499 series, which in the EU classification mainly covers thickeners, stabilisers and emulsifiers.

What is E420 used for?

E420 belongs to the sweeteners group. Sweeteners (such as aspartame and sucralose) add sweetness with little or no calories. They are approved but widely discussed.

On food packaging you'll find E420 either as the number “E420” or by the name “Sorbitol” in the ingredient list, often after its function. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so an additive near the end is present only in small amounts.
