What is E310?

Propyl gallate, or propyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate, is an ester formed by the condensation of gallic acid and propanol. Since 1948, this antioxidant has been added to foods containing oils and fats to prevent oxidation. E310 sits in the E300–E399 series, which in the EU classification mainly covers antioxidants and acidity regulators.

E310 belongs to the antioxidants group. Antioxidants stop fats going rancid and food discolouring. Several are natural, such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
