What is E319?

tert-Butylhydroquinone is a synthetic aromatic organic compound which is a type of phenol. It is a derivative of hydroquinone, substituted with a tert-butyl group. E319 sits in the E300–E399 series, which in the EU classification mainly covers antioxidants and acidity regulators.

What is E319 used for?

E319 belongs to the antioxidants group. Antioxidants stop fats going rancid and food discolouring. Several are natural, such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
