What is E512?

Tin(II) chloride, also known as stannous chloride, is a white crystalline solid with the formula SnCl2. It forms a stable dihydrate, but aqueous solutions tend to undergo hydrolysis, particularly if hot. E512 sits in the E500–E599 series, which in the EU classification mainly covers acidity regulators and anti-caking agents.

What is E512 used for?

E512 belongs to the antioxidants group. Antioxidants stop fats going rancid and food discolouring. Several are natural, such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
